BUTTER FOR THE TROOPS.
DIFFICULTY OF COOL SPACE.
gift'consignments if overcome.
Arising out of the suggestion recently made by Captain G. R. Hutchinson that New Zealand should send on consignments of gift butter for the troops, on account of this indispensable item of New Zealand diet not being included in the military rations in Egypt, the Mayor of Auckland (Mr. J. H. Gunson) has communicated with the Minister of Defence inquiring whether, in the event of gift consignments of butter being obtained, free freight on transports will be provided by the Government.
Mr. Allen has replied expressing gratitude for the Mayor's offer, but adds: ."Whenever cooling space 'has been available we have sent butter by the transports, ,but the space is very limited. The commandant will be asked to communicate with you indicating whether any cooling- space is available on the next transports. Negotiations arc proceeding for an additional shop for produce to travel via Suez, and if those are successful it may be possible to take butter by this ship. You will be informed as soon as a decision is arrived at."
