INDUSTRIAL CASE.

■ . ■ ENGINEERS' EMPLOYEES. A case was decided at the Magistrate's Court to-day in which E. Holland and Co.. engineers, were charged with four breaches of the award, ail of wfulch arose out of the one case. Dr Bamford appeared for defendant, and pleaded guilty to technical breaches on three of the j counts, and riot guilty in respect to I the fourth one. The evidence in the latter charge was gone into thh? morning. A boy nameofß. W. G. Wallace deposed to having worked from 7;30 ajn. to 8 , "p.m. He was- not given tea money or paid overtime. In answer to Dr Bamford, witness said his employer told him to watcSi' the furnace, and turn off the gas at a certain time. Witness waa engaged as a message hoy. He was not an apprentice, but got more pay. He bad never been told not to use the took ;in the shop. Defendant said he never told the .boy Wallace to stay and watch the furnace. All he said was to be there and turn off the gas in the oven when it was" ready to be turned off. There was no wotVc for the boy to do. He did not know tho boy was not getting his tea. The lad could safely have taken two hours to •get his tea. Dr Bamford 6aid it looked as if there lmigh.t have been some misunderstanding of his instructions on the part of "the boy. His Worship a fine of 20/ and costs for an error in entering the hours worked, 20/ and costs for working the lad for more than 8i hours in one day, and 20/ and 'costs for failing to provide the lad with a meal or 1/ tea money, not having given notice the day before that he must stay aftcT hours. The fourth count, re employing the boy knore than 4-i hours without an interval for tea, was dismissed, Mr Kettle remarking that the evidence was most'eonflicting, and lie could not record a conviction.
