BIG INCREASE IN MARRIAGES
i —i IN WELLINGTON CITY. SINGLE MEN AND THE RECRUITING SCHEME. A noticeable feature of the Wellington city vital statistics for the past month is that there is a large increase in the number of marriages. The increase in Auckland is not so marked. The figures show that the marriages in Wellington increased from 94 in Fcbru-1 ary, 1915, to 135 in February, 1916, an increase of 43.6 per cent. The increase for the two months of January and February was from 213 in 1915 to 256 in 1916. The sudden spurt in February coincided with the publication of details of the new recruiting scheme, showing that single men were to be called upon before married men, and with the public discussion of conscription, apparently a certain number of single men have hastened to place themselves in the married class. A comparison between tho Auckland figures for February, 1916, and the same month of last year is afforded by the following tabulation, provided by the registrar to-day:— Feb., 1916. Feb,. 1915.
