HINTS TO HOTEL-KEEPERS.

A WARNING IN AUCKLAND.

MENTIONED BEFORE .LICENSING BENCH.

At the quarterly meeting of the Auck- ! land City Licensing Committee to-day the police report submitted by SubInspector Mcllveney, Inspector of Hotels ' under the Licensing Act, voiced definite warning to the licensees of three hotels, the Albion, Hobson, and Empire Hotels, with regard to the conduct of their houses. Messrs. Edmund' Mahony (Albion Hotel) and Buttle (Empire Hotel) assured the Licensing Bench that their clients, while not admitting the matters in the report, would give euch attention ■to the points of hotel management that there would bo no cause for complaint when the annual meeting of the. Bench was held in June, and that (/he licensees appreciated the fact that their attention had been drawn to the matter. Sub-Inspector Mcllveney stated 1 that the report was merely intended for a warning, in view of the approach of the annual meeting, with an aseurance that were the matters mentioned not amended there would be definite police objections made to the renewal of the licenses. Incidentally he pointed out that the Licensing Act gave licensees an absolutely free hand, just as any other business person had, to refuse the euetom of any person whatsoever. Further, the section of the Act mentioned in connection with the Albion Hotel made it so serious a matter to permit women of ill-repute to loiter in licensed premises that any conviction for that breach must bo endorsed on the license and stand , always against the house, while the licensee so convicted wae debarred from again holding ' a license. Mr. L. J. Bagnall, acting-chairman of the committee, stated that it was the i feeling of the committee that the mattere mentioned in the report would be viewed in a serious light should there be no improvement reported -at the ' annual meeting.
