NEVER AGAIN!
NO MORE GERMAN DUMPING. PREFEREHTIA L TRADE FOR THE EMPIRE. CONSULTING THE COLONIES. (Received 1.5 p.m.) • LONDON, February 29. Addressing the delegates to a conference of the Chambers of Commerce, the Chancellor of Exchequer (Mr Reginald McKenna) said: "We have seen Germany during times of peace planning and preparing for war, and finally provoking a war. We were dependent upon her for many trade essentials; but never again!" The conference passed a resolution asking the Government to consult the Governments of the overseas Dominions for the purpose of obtaining their views on post-war problems; reciprocal trading; relations with enemy countries; and the control of businesses within the Empire belonging to enemy subjects. It was decided to ask the Government to establish preferential reciprocal trading within the Empire; reciprocal trading between the Empire and the Allies, with favourable treatment for neutrals; tariff restrictions against enemy countries, making impossible the dumping of goods, and any recurrence of the conditions that prevailed before the war; and urging the stimulation of home industries and the extension of the employment of native labour.
