DOUAUMONT DISMANTLED IN 1914.

NOT A GUN OR A MAN IN THE FORT. CAPTURE OF VERDUN WOULD GIVE ONLY EMPTY SHELL. (Received 1.10 pjn.) LONDON, February 27. Though the German claim of a great victory came as a shock ton Saturday evening, the French announcement this morning brought equally great relief. The French official wireless now puts the matter in truer, proportions. Commenting on the German statement that the armoured fortress of Douaumont had been captured, it says: "The Germans attribute importance to the fort, which is out of date, and was dismantled in tbeifirsi month of the war. It no longer contained either a gun or a soldier." The official wireless message quotes the "Matin" as saying: ••"If the Germans, after frightful losses, succeeded in capturing Verdun would find it an empty shell, for all its supplies were removed months ago."
