DESPERATE STRUGGLE RAGES ROUND DOUAUMONT.
■ POSITION CAPTURED BY GERMANS AGAIN IN FRENCH a. HANDS. WT.T.TI AGAINST FURTHER FIERCE ATTACKS. (Received 10.50 a.m.) PARIS, February 27. An official communique . states:—"Northward of Verdun the bombardment continues without relaxation. Eastward and westward of the Meuse the enemy's attacks at different points of the front met with vigorous counterattacks. All the enemy's fresh attempts in the region of Champ Neuville and against Poivre HHI, where we are solidly established, were repulsed. "A desperate struggle rages round the Douaumont front, an advanced element of Verdun-'s old defensive organisation. The position captured this morning by the enemy, after several fruitless assaults costing him very great losses, was again reached and passed by our troops, and all attelmpta-to;force -us back failed.
