KOTERO KULTURE.

Multure, as applied to the arts and sciences, is to be desired by everybody. The science of construction in engineering brings forward some marvellous results. A boisterous Regatta Day on our harbour this year proved the strength and endurance of the engines in our motor-boats. None showed to better advantage than the Kotero, a 36ft x Bft diagonal-built cruiser. This boat was to have a 20 h.p. Alpha engine fitted for Regatta Day, but it did not arrive in time, so a small temporary 10-12 h.p.; Alpha was put into her. As she moved ! wonderfully well with so small an engine; her owner decided to race her in the 8-knot class on Regatta Day. To the surprise of everyone she romped home an easy winner, claiming first prize from boats not half her size with equal motor power. Then the Gertie 11.. a 32ft x Oft 6in raised cabin cruiser, fitted with Alpha engine, ran second in the 10 knot class. She has raced three times this tseason, securing two firsts and a second. The Rose, a 36ft x Sft Gin raised cabin cruiser, won the 10J knot championship last season fitted with a 20 h.p. Alpha, and the Gertie 1. also held the 101 knot pennant till she broke the 10J knot record. All these boats arc heavy cruisers, fitted with cooking galleys, .sleeping accommodation for S to 10 persons, 6ft of head room, water tanks, awning and stanchions, masts and ngTinns. and a hundred and one weighty articles that go to make up a cruising outfit. Yet these small powered Alpha engines drive them aiead of the Dunch every time. Any powerful engine can drive a li"ht shell of a boat at a fast bat, but it takes an Alpha to push a heavy cruiser past the lot every time. Apply to Peter A. Smith, St. Mary's Bay, Ponsonby for prices and terms, which are right/Phone iGO2 (2 and 3 rings), day or evening.— (Ad.)
