THE RACING CARNIVAL

AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB,

THE SUMMER MEETING.

A LARGE ATTENDANCE,

VISITING HORSES SUCCESSFUL.

The Summer Racing Carnival was continued yesterday, when the Auckland Trotting Club opened their meeting at Alexandra Park. Although a few showers fell, they were not sufficiently heavy to cause any inconvenience, while they had no detrimental effect on ihe track, which was in jplendid order. The attendance was ' very the accommodation being taxed I to Its utmost, and the racing was decidedly interesting, the main feature being the jruecess of the visiting horses, which won six out of the eight races on the programme, including the Auckland Trotting Cup, which w n! to the Canterbury-owned horse Cathedral Chimes. j The champion mate Country Belle failed lin her attack on the mile record, being 4-sth of a second outside her previous :record. I Although there were two or three I inquiries during the afternoon, they were !of a minor character, and the racing parsed off without any unpleasant iucident. The work of the various officials, under the secretary, Mr. C. V, Mark, was well up to ■standard, and, taken all round, the day's I sport was one of the best yet held by the iciub. j THE TOTALISATORS. | Speculation was fairly brisk, and during 'the afteruoou the sum of £24.554 10/ was handled by the staff of Messrs. Blomfleld and Co., which is the slight decrease of £175 10/ on the corresponding day last year, rarti'tiiars are:— A VETERAN'S VICTORY. ! Racing commenced with the Introductory i Trot Handicap, which brought out eight j runners, the one withdrawal being Laviula. j l'apatina wound up favourite, -with about a hundred more tk-kets on her chance than Miss Huon Jun., -while good support was also accorded 'Special Bloom und Desmond. Miss Huon Jun. soon put in a gap on the field, aud with half the journey covered had a commanding lead. Going along the back the last time Papatina moved up, and at the turn for ihome was within striking distance. In the run down the straight the favourite came very fast, but could not get up. Miss Huon Jun. winning by a couple of lengths. The victory of Miss Huon Jnn. was very popular, and as her owner, who must be the veteran of the trotting world, brought her back to scale he was loudly cheered. A SOUTHERN" WIN. Wild Fire and Lord Thorpe were withdrawn from Che December Handicap, and the money came solidly for (Dorothy Dimple, which was sent out a good favourite. Bush Child was a strong second fancy, and there was plenty of support for Tim Doolan, Hymen, Winston M. and Belgian Queeva,.Uie,.race being ( a good betting. one. The'race was"ail interesting one, for after Prince Childe, Tim Doolan and Lena Patch had turus in the lead, the southern horse Hymen went to the front, and stalling off a strong challenge by Rotomanuka over the last quarter of a mile, won by two lengths, with Lena Patch ten lengths away, third. The favourite never got dear, but finished well, and was close up outside the placed horses when the post was reached. THE BIG RACE. When the numbers were framed for the Auckland Trotting Cup, the big event of tihe day, Makomako, which struck himseii the previous day, and Dr. Chutney were absentees, leaving a field of ten to battle for the thousand soys., and they were generally regarded as the finest lot that J have yet contested the event. Punters poured the money In for Hal Zoloch, and the Napier horse was sent out an odds on, favourite, carrying just over a thousand! tickets more than Cathedral Chimes, the second choice. The Maid got good support, the order of the others in the betting being Princess Sherwood, G.M., Master Park, Steel Bell, Jewel Chimes, and St C-rsula, with Prince Rufu3 the outsider. The Maid was very troublesome at the post, but tbey were eventually got away to a good start. Princess Sherwood refused to settle down at her hell, and Prince Rufus went out fast, with Cathedral Chimes and Hal Zoloch in close company, as his nearest attendants, and the trio were well clear of the field wlien half the journey was covered, although the back-markers were making up their leeway. When they entered on the last round Cathedral Chimes was the leader, with Hal Zoloch on terms, and the pair had the finish to themselves. Cathedral Chimes staying the longest and getting the decision by two lengths. Master Park got third, just in front of Jewel Chimes and Steel Bell.

The winner was driven a fine race hy the •Southern reinsmau, J. Bryce. He had the favourite (Hal Zoloch) doing all his work on the outside of him, and the Napier horse must have covered a lot of extra ground, especially on the turns. The race was really -between the -pair after half the journey had been covered, and the victory was a ve'-y popular one, the horse and driver being loudly cheered on returning to scale. After the race the stewards had M. Edj wards, the driver of Princess Snerwood. 'before them to explain the reason of tie ', mare refusing to settle down and not taking part in the race, the explanation tendered heing accepted. TUTS FAVOURITE SCORES. All the acceptors were harnessed up for the Eden Handicap Trot, the Southernowned Whispering Willie being a warm odds on favourite. Paul Huon being the only other to get anything like decent support. After Matilda had made the running for about half the journey, the favourite got in front, followed by King Capitalist, and passing the stand the last time the pair were in close company. At this stage the tyre of King Capitalists sulky burst, and the son of Capitalist then began breaking badly, spoiling a good winning cuance. Whispering Willie being left to go on and win nice-iy hy three lengths from Paul Huon, with Hova third. A SYDNEY WIN. ' Scenery and George K. were withdrawn from the" ParneU Handicap, and the Sydneyowned mare Rena Pointer was sorted out as a moral, and backed accordingly. Derby] Dillon got solid backing, and there was mouev for Stone Beidon and Sundial. The favourite got in front early, and never really gave her supporters any cause for uneasiness, for thongh Sundial ran up to within a couple of lengths of her crossing the top, it was only on sufferance, Kena Pointer drawing out again in the concludig stages and winning by a dozen lengths. Celtic got third through Stone Beldon breaking in the straight, hut Derby Dillon was very disappointing, and was eventually pulled up, while Selkirk refused to start untH his chance was absolutely homeless.

ANOTHER SOUTHERN* SUCCESS. Aotea-Poa, Lady Child, and Full Sail failed to come out for (he Waitemata Handicap, which "provided keeu betting, as between rrinzoru, Arrah Wanna, Flora McKiuney and Mt. Albert, and they were supported in that order, with just under two hundred tickets between them. The betting indicated the result as far as the first three concerned, for they filled the places, Prlnzora getting fhc decision by three lengths from Arrah Wanna, which was six lengths in front of -Flora McKinney, which did not trot evenly in the early stages, which probably cost her the race. FAVOURITE REFUSES TO LEAVE. The scratchiu-gs for the Great Northern Handicap were St. Ursula, The Maid, and Master Ham. and of the seven left, Aotca. Roa was backed as if it was only a question of collection, having over 1200 tickets more ou her chance than Ludski. the second fancy, which, in turn, had about 500 more thnn rrincess Sherwood, the others only being given starters' chancer. Tue backers] of the favourite were early in trouble, for she failed to leave the mark, and after Lady Child had piloted the field for half a mile, -Princess Sherwood got in front, and was never really troubled to win by a length from Lady Child, with the scratch horse third. Casling and Ludski both held good positions a couple of furlongs fromhome, but failed to stay it out. A BIG DIVIDEND. Rena Pointer was the only defection from the St. .Heller's Handicap, and a not favourite was found in Scenery, which had nearly twice as much on her dbanee as Huon Patch, the second fancy, the pair having over half the investments on the machine on -their chances. The favourite refused to strike a gait at her bett; and lost I a lot of ground, aud with half the journey covered Huon Patch was in -the Jead, jtjst clear of the scratch horse. Walnut, which | made up -his leeway very The favourite was handy at the home-turn, but the effort was too much for her, and she failed to reach the leaders, Walnut giving his owner a Jong-overdue win by two lengths. Huon Patch was third, three lengths In front of the favourite. Walnut was the outsider of the field, and paid a good two-figure dividend. .
