THE MINING' CORPS.
A POOR RESPONSE. (Pf Telegraph.—Own Corrcsponflont-J WAI HI, this day. It is quite patent that the call for local men to join the Miners' Corps for the front has proved somewhat i>: a failure. Only About 35 men have been enrolled to date, and they include a number of married men. It was ex pected that at least 100 would have volunteered out of »uch a large number of miner*, Wuihi being the most important mining centre in the Dominion. That the appeal has proved disappoint injr to the authorities is indicated by th<' fact that Major Browu (olluer commanding No. 2 group) had a confer ence with the olliiiale of the Miners' I'riion last night, and it was decided to call a meeting of the miner* for Tue-iday evening'next, when an address will be delivered on the subject of th ,, corps by Major Brown. Strong feeling exist* mnonj-l the men themaelvea that no married men should be expected to «o. at least until score* of young fellow*, with no material ties to detain them, tome forward and express willingne»» to do their duty.
