GALE ON COAST.

STEAMERS SEEKING SHELTER. Hough weather, with much rain, prevails on the coast, and some of the smaller coastal steamers have been delayed to some extent in consequence. The Northern Co.'* steamer Paeroa. which left Ma r eden Point on Wednesday night, is not expected to reach, port til! to-night. She was sheltering under Kawan Inland yesterday morning, and was seen by the Munaia off Rodney Point in the afternoon. The Munaia reported a strong north-cast #ale on the trip to Whangarei on Wednesday night. The TaAman. which left for Tailranga and Whakatane yesterday morning, was forced to take shelter under Motuihi Island. The Chelmsford, on her way to Tauranga. was passed yes-t-r----day by the Ngapuhi, which saw her sheltering under Slipper and Karewa Islands. Captain I'ierotti. of the Ngapuhi, reports that heavy rain is falling at Tauranga. and it will probably be impossible to work cargo so as Ao enable the steamer to leave this evening for Auckland. it is, therefore, probable that the Ngapuhi will arrive here on Sunday morning. The. weather beinp easterly, conditions on the West Coast are not so bad as on this side. The steamers Jlarawa and Rimu had no difficulty in crossing the Manukau bar yesterday afternoon.
