In the ea»e against -the farmer John Eath,,wJio early last month gave him- . self up to the police, and. confessed that he had murdered -his wife during a quarrel, the charge was reduced to one of -manslaughter, and a sentence of two years without hard- labour was imposed. The Judge, in passing sentence, remarked that the prisoner suffered from hereditary, mental weakness and the effects of ' liquor; If he- were sent to gaol, it would enable him to be treated.
