LONDON, March 11.
A correspondent at Petrograd says:—"General yon Hindenberg'a boast that lie did not mean to remain in the Niemen Valley, may deceive a few people, but confirms the impression that the longheaded Germane, despairing of success on the western' front, staked everything on a chance victory over the Russians, if not by an invasion of the Empire, at least by barring our advance upon Berlin. The repulsed and disappointed hosts are now wending homewards through the difficult lake and forest regions under the most terrible weather conditions. We are still on. the road to Berlin. and shall pursue them when the. proper time comes. In East Prussia the enemy haa obviously exhausted.his : offensive. In the Carpathians he. still advances with spasmodic vigour, but his attacks are invariably crushed."
Vienna reports claim numerous' successes over the Russians in Poland, Galicia, and the Carpathians. Besides inflicting great casualties the Austrian* took many hundreds prisoner. ■ • ■
