VIOLENT BOMBARDMENT AT NIEUPORT.
BRITISH CAPTURE A VILLAGE NEAR THE LYS.
ENEMY'S COUNTER-ATTACK IX THE CHAMPAGNE FAILS,
WELLINGTON March 11. The High Commissioner has sent the following cable from London: —
Paris. reports indicate a very violent bombardment at Nieuport.
Between the River Lye and La Btasec Canal, the British, supported by French heavy artillery, secured an important success, capturing the village of Ncuve Chapelle.
In this region the Allies took 1,000 prisoners, including several officers. The German losses were very heavy.
Later reports indicate that in the Champagne region the enemy's violent counter-attack did not gain, a foot of ground. The Allies consolidated and enlarged their position on the hill, where they obtained mastery, inflicting great losses on the enemy.
On the heights of the Meuse the Allies' artillery completely demolished more trenches.
