INDUSTRIAL CASES.

Several industrial cases came before I the Magistrate's Court this morning, i The first case called was that of the Auckland Hotel and Restaurant Employees' Industrial Union of Workers (Mr. A. E. Skelton) v. JohnPagni, of the | British Hotel, Queen Street (Mr. R. Singer). In this case a. penalty was claimed of £10 on the ground tbat defendant failed to grant his two porters one full day's holiday each week between tbe 2Dth of April and the 4th of June.

Mr. Skclton asked for an adjournment for one week, as the secretary of the anion had-gone to Gisbprne. Mr. Singer objected to any adjournment being granted. This was a case in which the Department had declined to take action, and the union had gone on with it. Now, it appeared, the union had not bothered to instruct Mr. Skelton to he ready for tbe case. • Mr. Kettle:. II you are allowed costs you will not be .prejudiced. ■ Mr. Singer said the ease had been hanging over since last November. Mr. Kettle: What harm will another week's adjournment do your case? Mr. Singer: The suspense sir, is awful; my client might have a nervous breakdown;

Mr. Kettle 6aid he would risk that, and adjourn the case, and allow Mr. Singer one guinea costs. He did not think Mr. Pagni's. nervous system would collapse in,the meantime.
