It is impossible to purchase extras except soap, brushes and towels and German dictionaries. The lnstmentioncd arc ridiculously cheap, costing only threepence. An officer explained: "We want the French and English to learn our language, so that they will Understand us better.'' The clothing of many of the prisoners is in a pitiable state. The men are permitted to write one postcard weekly. An officer who intimated that the prisoners would be employed in planting crops in spring, added thoughtfully: "No doubt they will be with us for the harvest "
