AUSTRIAN SECOND ARMY RETREATS.
movement south-east upon the French centre between Paris and Verdun has been checked by the Allies, and it is reported that the right wing of the invaders to the eastward, of Paris has been driven back, taking a north-easterly ]inc. The action was general along the whole front, and, while the French advanced at some points and retired at others, the general position remains unchanged. The French are optimistic, and it is declared that the preconceived plan of General Joffre is being carried out. The British troops crushed the enemy's right wing and decimated the Imperial Guard. The Russians have again, been victorious over the Austrians, whose forces are now held to be little more than a negligible factor in the campaign. The Russians expect to launch an. army of 800,000 against Germany. Two British trawlers have been struck by mines in the North Sea and sunk. The loss of life in the sinking of the Pathfinder is given at 246. The British destroyer Welland is reported to have sunk ■several-German torpedo boats on the China coait.
