LIEDERTAFEL CONCERT.
Thai, popular society of singers the Auckland Licdertafel gave its 104 th concert in tlie Town Hall last night before a crowded audience Prior to the commencement of the programme the choir nml atidicm-r joined lustily in the singing of "Rule, Britannia," the "Marsellaise." and the National Song of Great liritain, to full organ accompaniment by Dr. Thomas. Besides being patriotic in character, mnny of the items of the programme were redolent of the son, and the selections found favour with the audience, most of them being encored. A spirited reading was given of the Rttilors' chorus, "We Rock Away." The 'basses sang well together in "For the Sailor's Heart," while the staccatos were carefully observed in "Crying Blow, yo Merry Gales." The sustained degrees and inner parts leading to the slow movement received adequate notice, and nicely phrased was "O, Moonlight Nights!"' Good part-singing, clear enun|elation and suitable shading marked the performance of Kuckcn's "To the .Stars," while very sweetly sung was Bishop's "Sleep, Gentle Lady." Laurent de Rillc's •'Song of the Crusaders " was creditably rendered, and a vigorous and spirited •lelivery was given of Hatton's "Our Ship Now (iocs with a Pleasant Gale." Worthy of mention ie the commendable way th"c different divisions sang the syncopated bars, "Heave, ho." Seth Clark's "RpiTssinna!" received a broad and expressive reading. Very impressively sung was "Lord God of Hosts'' and the 'subsequent reiterated ''Lest We Forget." and a maestoso performance adequately fitting tin; sentiments of words and music was secured of the final verse, "For Heathen Heart." Dyke's arrangement of the hymn "Holy. Holy, Holy." was reverently sung, and the phrasing, part-singing, enunciation, and intonation left little to be. desired. A pleasing rendering was also given of Abt's ''Evening Bell." Miss J. Buttle, after her singing of Allitsen's "The Lord is My Light" and Porter's "Western Flower " was encored, as was also Misss Dorothy Baker, violinist, whose talent was displayed to advantage in her readings of Sarasate's "Romania Andaluaz," and Grieg's Allegro Op. '45." Mr. J. W. Atkinson's fine bass was heard successfully in Allitsen's "The Lute Player," and "in the ballad "March! Mnreh!" After each he was Warmly recalled. Miss Wyman and Mr. Whittaker acted as accompanists, and Dr. W. E. Thomas conducted.
