GERMAN SHIPS
i IN AUSTRALIAN WATERS. ONE TRIES TO RUN AWAY. MELBOURNE, August 5. The North German Lloyd steamer Pfalz escaped from Port Phillip to-day. Upon the vessel's arrival at the heads she ignored the examination signals. A shot fired across her bows was likewise disregarded, and she went full speed ahead. The steamer left without her clearance papers, but she soon returned to port. The North German Lloyd Company state that she had her clearance papers, and that the first intimation of the war she received was a shot across her bows. The captain put back to port immediately he realised the situation. The German vessels now in port at Sydney, which have been prevented from leaving, comprise the Sumatra, Athene, Osnabruek, Germania, and Tiberius.
