THE FINANCIAL POSITION.
A COOL HEAD WANTED. SYDNEY, August 5. A meeting of the Stock Exchange Committee to-day adjourned without coming to any definite decision regarding proposals to close down. Heads of the banks and other commercial enterprises strongly advise, investors to keep a cool hold on scrips. They say that the banks and other securities arc sound, and there is nothing to fear.
The official declaration of war caused the wheat market to become excited, holders showing a strong disposition to realise at substantial concessions. The prices of old grain fell to 4/I', and new to 3/11. Nearly 45.000 bags were offered, with no purchasers.
