ROTORUA LAKES.
OWNERSHIP CLAIMED BY MAORI'S.
The second round of the contest with regard to the claim advanced by th? natives to the ownership of the'lakes in the Rotorua district will probably take place in August before Judge J. W. Browne, of the Native Land Court, at Rotorua. It will be remembered that the first encounter was won by the natives, who successfully established their right to the case being removed from the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court to that of the Native Land Court. The interests of the Maori owners are in the capable hands of Me-sr- F. Karl. X.C.. and Skcrrett. X.C.. of Auckland and Wellington respectively. The Crown will Ik- represented by Messrs Salmond. Solicitor-General, and with him probably Mr Ostler. Crown Prosecutor.
The crucial point will probably revolve round the question whether the customary rights of natives exist over the lands covered by these lakes.
