MINISTER AND CONFERENCE.
SYDNEY. February 7. A letter was read yesterday to the Labour Conference from Mr Griffith (Minister for Works), in reply to the urgent telegram asking him to attend the conference, stating that he was unable to be present. He declared that he had no knowledge of any charge against himjbut assumed that the trouble had arisen owing to the fact that he had not authorised an alteration in the rate of wages, pending an appeal lodged against a recent Federal award. He defended his attitude as being in accordance with the practice where appeals were sub judiee. After discussing the question of censuring Mr Griffith, the conference appointed a committee to inquire into the matter.
