WAIFS AND STRAYS SOCIETY.

AX APPEAL. fTo the Editor.) Sir, —Will you kindly allow mc, through the medium of your columns, to make an appeal to your readers on behalf of the Waifs and Strays Society? The splendid result of the Society's operations may be gathered from the fact that over 18,000 children have been received under its care since the commencement of operations in 1881, the majority of -whom are no-w self-supporti-ng and self-respecting men and women, and worthy citizens of our Empire. At present the Society's family consist* of more than 4,400 boys and girls, who are being fed, clothed and cared for in the 110 Homes, or boarded out in the country with respectable foster parents. Then there is the emigration branch, which is chiefly utilised for those child Ten whom it 19 absolutely necessary to separate ac far as possible' from their unworthy and disreputable relatives, in order that all the loving care and attention bestowed upon them may not be wasted. For the maintenance and extension of such-a work funds must be forthcoming, and it is with this object in view that I am appealing to your readers to show their interest and practical sympathy with those in the Old Country. At this time of the year, which we feel justified in celebrating by mutual hospitality and goodwill, there must be -many who would be willing to give a contribution, if only as a thank-offering for their present position and happy home-life, and gifts in money and kind would be most gratefully received at the addrese given below. Unfortunately at the present time there is a serioue overdraft on the general fund, amounting to nearly £6,000, which naturally causes hindrance, and if the Society's -work is not to be curtailed, it is most necessary that the deficit should be extinguished without delay. Subscriptions and donations, however email, - are earnestly solicited, and will be most gratefully received and acknowledged by, yours, etc., E. de M. RUDOLF. Old Town Hall, Kennington Road, London, England.
