ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES.

At the Police Court to-day a young man, James Walsh, aped 24, a photo- , grapber at Rotorua, formerly in tbe : postal department, was charged with having obtained the sums of £'.29 10/, | £100, and £145 from the money-order j office at Rotorua in September and' Oc- \ tober by means of vakielesty cheques 1 d-rawn on the Jinnlc of -.New Zealand. As an ex-civil servant Walsh j was known to the staff, and with a good I character, and repTeseirbatioirs that he was in a flourishing condition, induced the officers to accept the cheques. Various cheques l iseued were subeequently covered by acensed, out matters in connection with the £145 chetrue had developed too Jar when negotiations' for a settlement were opened. Various telegrams and credits 'wrrne received in respect to other cheques. Detective. Hollis en;id that on arrest Walsh said he. wa«s ertpecting to get a partner and- repay the amount. Full restitution had since, 'been made. Walsh reserved his defence, pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail wa6 fixed in irwo sureties of £100. and accused in £200.
