They travel to Egypt, and pick up the Orvieto at Port Said on December 3rd. General Godley expects to be in Auckland in time for the military tournament, which takes place in the first week in January next. A Dunedin resident who lias just returned from Auckland states that lie had the paradoxical experience of boarding at an hotel there, and being at the same time his own cook, waiter and domestic servant. He did various services, from making his own bed to cooking his own breakfast. The cooks and waiters meantime were on strike. The Dmietlinite had nothing but praise for tlic specials from the country, who conducted themselves well under orders in face of provocative situations. Much enthusiasm was shown by them, and their camp -at the Domain was as orderly and well-con-ducted as a military encampment. One farmer said that in order to go as a special he had left seventy cows in full milk in the Wtiikato. He had taken his best labourers with him, and left only three boys and the womenfolk to milk the cows. He had no doubt most of the tatter would be dry when he got back, but he did not mind, so determined was he to preserve "law and order."
