After the eonferenr-e rose this morning, Superintendent Kie'y reported to the Magistrates that, in his opinion, there was reason to expect riots or tumults in the city of Auckland. A letter was also received from Mr. Short, the secretary of the. Shipping and Stevedoring Companies of mg that at a meeting of representative this morning, a resolution was carried "That this meeting respectfully suggests to the Auckland Licensing Bench the advisability of keeping all hotels in the city and the vicinity closed till the cessation of the strike.
The Magistrate! have announced that they can Dot grant the appb'cation of the Ldcersed Victuallers' Association to reopen the hotels at present.
