Allan, and Johnstone. with a cargo of esparto grass, is afiro off St. Catherine's Point. She offered a remarkable spectacle from Ventnor owing to the highly in flam - mable nature of her cargo. The Scotsdyke was bound from North Africa to Sunderland. Several of the crew were hemmed in the forecastle, and had a. marvellous escape. They dashed through the flames. one being badly burnt. Captain Grijror remained on the bridge until it was burned under him. and the engineers stuck to their posts amid dense smoke until the vessel was about to be abandoned.

The battleship Irnn Duke, in :i heavy sea. took off all on board, including the captain's wife, two passengers, and 2i of the crew.

The Pcotsdyke was aflame from end to end. Her hulk is now being towed to the Isle of Wight.
