LOST OVERBOARD.
TWO SAILOSS _»*__OW_TZD. A tragic incident marked the voyage of the barque Northern Chief, which arrived at Sydney on the 29th ult. from Auckland, two members of the crew, L. Schlatter and Otto Enelson being lost overboard. The barque was 20 days on the passage, and the run .was marked by ordinary weather. On the lfith inst., at 2.10 o'clock in the morning, the cry of .Man overboard:" was raised, and on rushing on deck. Captain Johnson found that two members of the. crew had fallen overboard They had been hauling on the lee fore 'brace, and by some means or other, during a lurch of the barque, lost their hold, and' tumbled over the side.
Their cries for help were heard from the water, and when the captain reached the deck he saw the men -truggling some distance astern. The barque had been close hauled, wifJh a north-west -rind, and she was quickly thrown aback. Meanwhile two lifebuoys and a. quantity of loose timber were thrown overboard, and a boat got in readiness. The boat was smartly launched 1 and despatched to the scene, .with two seamen, in charge of the second officer. The -boat cruised around tie locality, for about an hour, and then returned, after a fruitless search for the missing men. Captain Johnson then determined to sail the 'barque over the spot, and she beat about the locality until long after daylight, but -without result. One of the men had beivy sea-boots on. and the other was- barefooted. Both, were foreigners. Schlatter was a German, 21 years of age, and Encisen a Norwegian, aged 22 years. •
