PUKEHINAU SENSATION.
TWO ARRESTS MADE. A WOMAN IK THE CASE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PAHIATUA, Wednesday. A young man, William Clemens, and Mrs. Ireland, a middle-aged woman, who were arrested on a charge of shooting Frederick Ireland, the husband of the latter accused, at Pukehinau on Monday night, were brought in from iPongaroa by coach to-day, and on appearing at the local Magistrate's Court were Temanded to appear at Dannevirke on August 13. Accused, who were not represented by counsel, did not apply for bail, and will be lodged to-night in Palmerston North gaol. The accused and Ireland, it appears, had supper on Monday night, about 9.30, at Ireland's house. Clemens afterwards went outside. Ireland followed immediately afterwards, and returned to the house a couple of minutes later. He took off his boots atnd was walking towards his bedroom when Clemens called out, " Fred, come out. There's a horse 'hung up in the wires." Mrs. Ireland said to her husband, " Is that Bill calling out?" Ireland replied in the affirmative. Ireland then went outside towards a fence about three chains from Ireland's house. On getting on top of the intervening rise Ireland, as he could not sen Clemens, called out, "Whereabouts?" Clemens replied, "Here." Ireland states that immediately afterwards he saw a flash like that from the discharge of a jrun, and he felt a burning sensation about his left arm, left log. and the lower part of 'his aWoraen. Ireland fell, and on rising another shot was fired, but it did not 'hit him. Ireland says that ho. then hesitated as to whether he should rush Cle-mens, but, seeing the latter opening the breech of the (run Fhought he was going to have another shot, and thereupon decided to get away. Up made off in the direction of 'Mr W. He. stood up before the firing of the second shot. The shot <run, which it 13 said was used by Clemens, is a 14 bore weapon.
