JUBILEE OF PUHOI.

RE-UNION OF SETTLERS. (By Telegrapli.—Own Correspondent.) PUHOI, Sunday. The fiftieth anniversary of the foundation of Puhoi was celebrated to-day, when a re-union of old settlers was held. The festivities commenced with a banquet, after which speeches were made in the Town Hall. In the evening a dance is to be held.

The township of Puhoi, which is situated about seven or eight miles from Waiwera, has the distinction of being the centre of a settlement of the descendants of 86 Bohemians, who came to New Zealand in 1863. Forty-acre sections were allotted to each of the immigrants, who had contributed the specified sum of £40, but by the time they w«re able to commence work on their sections most of them were* destitute. To-day, however, the township contains an up-to-date hotel, two stores, a. school, church, and town hall. The children are all aceue-tom-ed to speak their Bohemian dialect when at home, and display a greater knowledge of that language than of Ens- , lislnrhen. entering school-life.
