Thirty thousand spectators watched the opening of the stadion, despite the i fact that the new grounds are not sup- j posed to accommodate that number. | General Eobbielski greeted the Emperor and Empress on behaJf of the one and a-quarter million athletes affiliated to the Imperial Committee of the Olympic | Games. There were released on this occasion ]0,000 military pigeons bearing to all parts of Germany the Kaiser's motto:
'■Ever ready for the Empire's Glory." Thirty thousand athletes, bearing a thousand banners, then marched past, saluting the Emperor, and crying, "Hail. Leader.'" Ten thousand gymnasts followed, then came twenty thousand cyclists and four thousand footballers, with bands of lawn tennis players, swimmers, runners, skaters, and finally 8,500 boy scouts and 500 girl scouts. Displays followed by female clubswingers and of wall-scaling by guardsmen. The Emperor stood for two hours returning the salutes.
