Some days ago a cable news item stated that the aeroplane in which "Mr. Gustave Hamel successfully flew from London to Cologne was to be presented to the "Sew Zealand Government. General Godley stated to-day that, upon the arrival of the machine, the nucleus of a "New Zealand aviation corps will be organised under the Defence. Department, the preliminary steps for the formation of such a corps having already been taken. An officer of the New Zealand ;F orces _Lieuteiiaiit. Piper—is undergoing instruction in the art of aviation at •Home now, with tlie object of taking up this branch ot military service on his return to the Dominion. There is also some pood material in 'New Zealand for the nucleus of an air corps, in the shape of men qualified by their knowledge of mechanics to take up training. It is understood that the machine presented is a -biplane of the Bristol type. The Bristol biplane has proved its usefulness, not only in rontr-distance (lights, but also in active campaign work during the Balkan war.
