ILLEGALLY ON PREMISES.
MIDNIGHT EPISODE AT PARNELL.
It has been customary during the summer months for Mr. T. Gilbert and members of his family to visit Takapuna beach for the week-ends. On Saturday last, however, the weather was not sufficiently inviting to cause them to leave their permanent home at the corner of Cleveland and Gladstone Roads, Parnell. When they retired all was well, but about half* an hour after midnight they were awakened by a noise as of someone fumbling at a bark window. Mr. Gilbert immediately let himself out of the back door to investigate, and it is understood that he observed a man attempting to effect an entry by one of the windows. The latter at once commenced to run. but Mr. Gilbert overtook and closed with him. They wrestled for a brief period, and as a result the intruder was pinned to the ground, while the owner of the premises called lustily for assistance. Some male neighbours came on the scene, and someone from inside the house rang up for the police. It is understood, however, that bi'fore members of the force arrived the trespasser had pleaded effectively enough to be allowed to depart, after giving his name ,and address. Information obtained by a reporter is to the effect that the intruder is a man aged about 25, also that he is in regular employment, and bc.lones to a family well-known in Parnell. He would seem to have been indulging in stimulants on Saturday night, as when interrogated he appeared to be somewhat muddled in spppch and unable to make a coherent explanation of his presence in some other person's back yard. It is stated that more will be heard of the affair through the medium of the Police Court.
