GIFTS TO THE CITY.

RARE BOOKS AND AUT WORKS. Mr Henry Shaw, who is well known ac a member of the City Council, has .donated to the city a large number of valuable books and rare manuscripts, to be housed, in the Art Gallery and known as the Shaw Collection. The gift was last night accepted by the City Council, •with thanks. It was mentioned by the ■Mayor, and assented to by the Council, That Mr Shaw should be aeked, as one of the few men in Auckland capable of the work, to properly catalogue and arrange the Grey Collection of books, manuscripts and curios. The Council last night also thankfully received, for the benefit .of the citizens, a gift of 800 volumes of books from the library of Mr Frederick Shaw. The" Mayor reported to the City Council yesterday evening that Mr John Marshall, of Princess Street, had offered to the city, for exhibition in the Art Gallery, two pictures that had been purchased in Florence. The Mayor stated that the pictures appeared-to him to be very fine wocke, _and._ he jecomiaended their acceptance by the Art Gallery Committee; and the Council adopted the recommendation.
