Aa accident which occasioned considerable excitement is recorded in the Nelson papers. A 'bollock which -was being landed from a steamer, after being slung ashore, dashed ha«k from the race on board the steamer, ahd after cansing a great commotion on the deck jumped over the seaward bulwarks into the harbour. A boafs crew put off in pursuit,, and the -maddened animal got under the w.hari as its pursuers came up to it. It then made for the boat, and being in shallow water was able to get on board, the crew making a hasty get away on the wharf piles. The bullock plunged across the boat, capsizing it, and finally was drowned, the carcase being towed ashore. Mr D. C. Bites, the Government Meteorologist, records the noteworthy fact that at JMacquarie Jfcland, on Saturday night, just about the time that Wellington was experiencing a sharp, earthquake, the barometer registered 27.91, which is the lowest reading recorded in those-, regions -for a long time.
