THE SOLDIER TEACHER.

SHOULD HE A3_TEM) CAMP? The Chairman of the (Auckland Education Board reported at to-day's meeting that several applications had .been received from teachers for leave to attend ' Territorial training camps. This caused ' him to remark that under the present ar- ! rahgement the country was losing the ' services of a large number of men who 1 would make efficient officers. It appeared that teachers were not allowed to " wear the King's uniform unless they " attended the training camps, although, he supposed, there -was not much connected i with the camps that the teachers who ' were officers did not already know. He was pert-onalry aware of half-a-dozen ! teachers who were exceptidnally capable , officers, and it seemed a shame that the 5 services of .these men should be lost un- [ less they were prepared to attend camp. - He thought that some recommendation > should be made to the Department that i capable teachers should be recognised as . officers without it being compulsory to i attend camp. Prom the point of view s of the Board, also, it -was a matter of 1 extreme difficulty to fill the places of the teachers who had to attend camp, and \ the position was altogether an unsatis- - factory one. , The Board unanimously supported the i attitude of the Chairman on the question, and it was decided to approach the ' Department on the matter.
