OHURA.
The Ohura A'alley has lately enjoyed an unprecedented spell of beautiful weather, to such an extent that"some of the farmers have had the unusual luck of burning off in the autumn. The main road promises to oe a veritable quagmire this : winter. ATe are expecting to see the ITemier here. If he is Waiting to have ocular demonstration of the state of the Ohura roads In winter, we will be pleased to wait. The County Council has received notice that a sum of £10,000 Is available for roads, etc In the county. The expenditure of this ought to nld In raising the depression which is everywhere evident in the "district, to say nothing of the needs of settlers in regard ; to goading. The'monthly meeting of the Farmers' Union was held in the Town Hall on the sth. Resolutions were carried asking the Minister of Justice to station a constable here; the Hallway Department to establish telephonic communication with Okahukura: the. surrounding councils to place pennyroyal on their noxious weeds' Schedule; and drawing the attention of the Council and of the Government to numerous wants in the district, mainly roads aud bridges. A public pound has been established here, and not before It Is wanted. The Rev. Mr Mallett has taken up the I duties of Church of England pastor here, and is permanently settled amongst us. He has revived the scout movement, in which he is meeting with every encouragement. Mr Metcalfe, of the firm of" Broadfoot, Finlay, and Metcalfe, recently left the Ohura. During his stay here he exerted himself in all that stood for the progress of tlie district, and' prior to his departure was made the recipient of a handsome sold watch and chain, the gift of the' settlers. His friends and wefiwishers also entertained him at a dinner, when a very enjoyable evening was spent." A- '-Gazette" notice advises the change of name of Maugaroa School District to that of Ohura.
