INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of the Auckland Provincial Industrial Association was held in the Strand Cafe this afternoon. The president (Mr S. .T. Harbutt) presided, and there was a very large attendance of members, and ot representatives from kindred associations of business and commercial men. The nnnnal report submitted to the members showed Hint a strenuous year's work had been accomplished, although regret was expressed that an attempt to keep members more closely in touch with each other by ! quarterly meetings- had not been successful. During the year the committee had arranged Influential deputations to the Frlme Minister and other Ministers on the questions of nfToresta—on, arterial roads, and Immigration. As an Integral part of the Now Zealand Industrial Corporation, the Association had joined a strong and representative deputation at Wellington, when , representations were made to the head of the Government on: (1) The Iron Industry; (2) shortage of skilled labour; (3) public contracts; (4) Customs tariff; (5) the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act; (6) water power arid electrical supply. Mention was also made of the effective arrangements that had been made to keep in touch with nil provincial chambers of commerce, county councils, road boards, and other organisations, and to collect Information and data useful for the purposes of the Association. During the week set apart for the "industries" display two classes from the Technical School hnd been shown over certain city factories, nud the operations witnessed by them had been explained by competent instructors. It had been decided, the report mentioned, not to hold a shop window display this year, In view of the forthcoming " Exhibition. l The committee was endeavouring to make arrangements whereby a number of small manufacturers might be Induced to combine, under the auspices of the Association, to make a good comprehensive exhibit. The present membership of the Association was 130. The report concluded with a vote of appreciation of the services rendered by the Executive Committee and by the secretary in the Interests of loeni manufacturers. In moving the adoption of the annual report, tlie president (Mr S. J. Harbutt) referred with satlsfactiou to the amount of useful work that had beeu accomplished during a busy year. Largely owing to the activity of tlie Association In the matter of afforestation, the Forestry Coinmlßslon had been set up. and was now collecting information. The matter of immigration, had also been brought very prominently before the Government, and the efforts of the Association In this connection had borne good results. Mr. Harbutt urged members to send In any suggestions they thought would help' In the revision of the Customs tariff, an Important matter, to which the Association had devoted a very great deal of attention. Information thus available would be very useful when the attention of the Minister was directed to existing anomalies: The report was seconded by Mr. S. J. Nathan, and adopted unanimously. A vote of thanks was tendered to the past office-bearers and executive committee for their services, and was approved with enthusiastic cordiality.
