One of the guides at Mount Cook Hermitage told a reporter the other day that the chamois, imported and libera ted in tho vicinity in 1910, appeared to be on the increase. They were frequently seen 'at distances wide "apart, while thg.tracks of young chamois had been observed in various places. As the animals were not gregarious it was difficult to give any estimate as to the rate at which they were multiplying. They had drifted chiefly to the densely-wooded spurs on the West Coast side, where the conditions were superb for their existence. Sometimes traces of chamois were found on the tops of tho high snow peaks, whither the little animals seemed to wander more for curiosity's satisfaction than for anything else, in the vicinity of the Lindis Gorge red deer seem to he very plentiful, and the reporter saw several, including hinds, bounding up the hills, frightened by the motor car.
