In 1908, being in a low state of health owing to having contracted fever in Fiji, he gave up painting and purchased a confectioner's and. fruiterer's bueinees at Whangarei for £115, of which he paid £90 in cash. Of that sum £25 was borrowed from hie father. For the first 18 months he did well, 'but when opposition started on ilie other eide of the street, hie takings fell away tremendously, amd lie lost money. iHe could , not give up owing to having tlie shop on lease. The landlord seized the shop ■fittings for rent, and the debtor was stranded with about ;Cl3O liabilities. He had eirice been working as a journeyman painter, but had wiped off very little of hie liabilities. A judgment eummone ivae the immediate cause of Mβ filing.
