ROAD WORK IN REMUERA.

AN EXPRESSION OF OPINION. Some difference of opinion was expressed Iby members of the Remuera. Road Board last evening about the permanence and general state of the new work done at the top end of Victoria Avemre. The question was raised by Mr. Moore-Jones asking how it was that this particular section of the road, which had to bear a lot of traffic, had been shunned, while the remainder of the thoroughfare had been properly formed on a good foundation. • Tbe chairman explained that shortage of funds had induced the Board to cover this section, with nine inches of scbria, which he maintained would prove quite satisfactory. Certainly the mud had worked through in one spot, but the reason of that was tbe water underneath from a leak in the pipes forcing it through. "Well, if the Board passed that sort of thing without insisting on a handlaid foundation, it was a culpable business. The top section of the road is a rotten piece of work, and I should like to know who was responsible for it," exclaimed Mr. Moore-Jone6 with some heat. ....... i: "The road ie all right, and another three inches will make the top end. better than the other part," retorted the chairman. "It seems a funny thing to mc if private individuals can impress the Board with 'the necessity of getting blue metal put oil little side roads, and yet on an important -thoroughfare like Victoria, Avenue a few inches of soft scoria is considered good enough," . significantly remarked Mr. Herrold. "It was all a question of money at the time," replied Mr. Dickson, in defending the action of the old mem-beis, and the subject was closed by leav ing the matter of putting the road into respectable trim in the hands, of the chairman and engineer.
