NATIONALIST VICTORY

IN THE ENEMY'S CAMP. EXCITEMENT IN DEKRY. (Received 8 a.m.) LONDON, January 31. The by-election at Londonderry resulted in the return of Mr Hogg, the Nationalist candidate, who polled 2.U99 votes to the 2,642 votes secured by Mr Pakenham, the Unionist candidate." After a strenuous day. with record voting, 75 per cent of the votes bad been polled. A fierce contest then commenced to gather in the remainder. Many remarkable scenes were witnessed. A man. evading a warrant for his arrest, returned to the polling place and voted. Bedridden persons were carried to the booths. One Unionist died before he had recorded his vote. Several sick Nationalists, accompanied by priests prepared to administer the last rites, were carried to the poll. During the excitement there was much bottle throwing, and revolvers were freely used. The result of this election gives the Nationalists the majority in the Parliamentary representation of Ulster, the figures now being: Nationalists 17 members, Unionists 10 members. The election occurring at this juncture, with its attendant result, must have far-reaching effect, because the Unionist boast that Ulster was against Home Rule loses its force. Derry was the only county hitlierto in which the Nationalists had not a member. Mr J. Devlin. M.P. in the House of Commons, stated a few months back that Derry, whenever a vacancy occurred, would be captured by the Nationalists, and when the franchise would be extended, at least three other Ulster scats would be captured.
