THE WEEKLY HALF-HOLIDAY.

iTo ttie Editor.! Sir,—ln your report of 'the meeting of delegates of local bodies to decide the half-holiday 'question, the remarks attributed to mc are hardly correct. You etate "that in making a canvas of the district I found the shopkeepers were not very keen on the subject, and for that reason supported the amendment." Now the fact is. as explained at the time, the shopkeepers I waited lipon are keen on the subject and unanimously favour Saturday, notwithstanding the fact that they are all "email suburban shopkeepers." Thus, with both the employers and employees in my district favouring the week-end half-holiday, and after hearing many of the delegates express themselves as "personally" in favour of Saturday (although for various reasons they fe-lt compelled to support Wednesday). I had not lonjr to consider that my duty was to support the amendment.—l am, etc., J. P. McPHAIL. Birkenhead, January 23. 1013. RE CRICKET. (To the Editor.) Sir,—Tβ crickpf TSe'irtg encouraged as it should he in Auckland? After the Christmas holidays all district championships were postponed for a week tn the JMJi inst,, making a whole moirth of delay. Very few people went out to Eden Park to see the N.SAV. Teachers, partly because University gave them a ve-FV close game that week, and partly because the Auckiand te.am, being rather weak, preferred doing something themselves. The Oddfellows' picnic in to Le held in the Domain on the 22n:l of next month. On that Saturday the matchee begun the previous week will be finished. The following Saturday the Amateur Athletic Sports will be held on the same ground, which means no matches there for four Saturdays. Furthermore, the Exhibition intends to claim a monopoly of the Domain next season. I think it is about time that cricketers bestirred themselves.—l am, etc., JUNIOR.
