VERY REV. DR. KENNEDY.
The Very Hspr. Dr. Kennedy. 11-A-, principal ot St. Patrick's Catholic College, Wellington, -wio conducted the annual retreat of the clergy ot the Auckland Diocese this week, left by the -Rotorua express this morning. During his I stay in Auckland, Dr. Kennedy has been the guest of the Rev. Dr. Cleary, at Bishop Pala-ee, Ponaonby. Just prior! to the departure of the egress. Dr. Kennedy was seen by a representative of ' : the "Auckland Star." j "This is my first visit to your city,"' said the school cleric, "and I have enjoyed it very much. Now that reminds mc there is one thing I can tell you. I was taken to the top of One-tree Hill. I I have been over a good part of the I world, and seen many fine places, but I think the view from the top of Onetree Hill more beautiful than any other scene I have ever been privileged to gaze upon. It is a magnificent outlook, and I ido not wonder at the Maori? making it a Pa."
"• As you are a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, you ceuld tell mc something regarding the irterest in that science in New Zealand."
" We have," said Dγ Kennedy, " a very] strong Astronomical Society in Welling-' ton. and it is doing good work. An j observatory has bee-n erected, and the! Society is now getting out a five-inch teifscope. There are some very enthu-1 siastic members in Wellington. Another observatory has been erected at Wellington College, and we are also ordering a telescope for St. Patrick's] College. There is every possibility- of. spwial solar work beinjr undertaken by | the University at Wellington, so we are; hoping to have these observations going] on in our cicy in the near future. Professor Laby : s very keen on iL. Miss : Proctor, daughter of the great astro- j riomer, who lectured both in Auckland and Wellington recently, is now on her way to visit the solar observatory in India. She has promised to return to New Zealand next September and give a series of lectures on astronomy in aid of the funds of a solar observatory. Mr C. E. Adams, Government Astronomer, has charge of the observatory, and imonsst other enthusiastic members of the Society I may mention Dr. Hector, Mr Gifford". and >ir Powles."
A number of clergy and other friends were at the station to see Dr. Kennedy off.
