The High Court recently declared invalid the award obtained by the Merchant Service Guild of Australasia on the ground that there was no dispute extending beyond the limits of one State. An acute position has now arisen. The old State award of New South Wales has expired, the result being that captains and officers arc without a legal award covering the conditions of employment. Tbe coastal shipowners of New South Wales recently intimated that they were willing to meet the Guild in conference. The Guild replied agreeing, provided wages and conditions were discussed. The shipowners have not replied to this. The Guild believes that it possesses the moral and active support of the seaside unions.
