ACCIDENT AT WAIHI.

Patrick Higgins, an eldesrly roan, working at the Grand Junction Company's new shaft now being sunk, fe_l a distance of 26 feet down the eshaft this morning, receiving rather eserioos injuries. Higgins was working on a stage 50 feet from the surface, and was sending up some planks when the accident occurred. His mate, a man named Dutton, was working on another (staging five feet below him. Button heard something fall, and, on calling out, received no answer. Investigating further, he discovered that Higgins had fallen off the staging and was lying on top of the pent house 26 feet below. He appeared to be badly hurt. Dr. Hyde was (summoned, and ordered the injured man to the hospital, where he was immediately conveyed in the ambulance. His principal injury sees— to "be to the head, which was cut. He is supposed also to be injured in the back. An operation & being performed at the hospital.
