NORTH LYELL INQUIRY.

MEANS OF ESCAPE. (Received 10 a,m.) HOBAKT, this day. At the North Lyell inquiry Mr. Murray, engineer of the Lyell mines, in his evidence said that it was not true to say that there were no other ways of getting out of the North Lyell mine if the main shaft, were blocked. The safety of the men was always the initial consideration. The men had a grievance committee, but never had any complaints to make. Mr. Curtain. Inspector of Mines, deposed that he visited the mine three days before the disaster, and travelled by the passes and stopes to the I.oooft level without using the main shaft. The men could have used this route if the fumes had not overcome them. Three miners declared that they tried and found the passes blocked.
