SHIPOWNERS' LIABILITIES.

(Received 11.15 a.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. The Australian Steamship Owners' Federation, in a letter to Mr Tudor (Minister for Trade and Customs), pointed out that provision of the Navigation Bill now before the House would involve an extra outlay of £111,000 per annum for ships now on the coast. In addition to shipowners' liability for the sick and injured seairan having greatly augmented, the carrying capacity of vessels was largely reduced by having to ; provide extra accommodation for crews. The shipowners had no desire to oppose anything reasonable for the safety and ! comfort of workers or the travelling public, but simply asked that vessels of whatever nationality engaged in the ■ coasting trade shall comply with the provisions of the Act and pay the wages ruling on Australian vessel's so as to prevent unfair competition.
