TREATED AS A CONVICT.

A JOHAWWESBURG STRIKER. CAPETOWN, March 12. In the Union Assembly Mr. Patrick Duncan moved the adjournment in order to discuss the prison treatment of Whitaker Morant, who was in connection with the Johannesburg tramway strike. Morant was afterwards released, and secured damages against the governor of Johannesburg Gaol because he had been treated as a convicted prisoner. Much comment has been made owing to Mr. Heraog (Minister for Justice) justifying the Departmental action on the ground that an emergency situation arose. The Prime Minister, Mr. Botha, treated the matter as a mere attempt to make party capital.
