Since the notification of a grant of £4,000 by the Department of Education for the equipment of the new Teihnical College in Auckland, certain small expenditures have been made therefrom, these including the purchase of some typewriters for use in the classes. The Department, however, has wribten to say tha>i this particular item will not be authorised, because since 1904 its policy 'has been not to provide typewriters for such purposes. The director (Mr. Geo. George) remarked that, despite such red tape tactics towards the Auckland College, the latter was doing better work than any of the other New Zealand colleges, as witness the result* of the recent examinations. "Perhaps that is why the Department does not like you," jocularly remarked the chairman. It was decided to forward a protest to the Department in connection with the matter, members agreeing with Mr George's contention that typewriting classes were of the utmost importance in regard to commercial education. Members of the Auckland Licensed Victuallers' Association assembled in numbers at the offices, Durham street, this morning, if or the pleasingceTemony of presenting to 5Tr. J. S. Palmer, president of the New Zealand licensed Victuallers' Association, and president of the Auckland Association, a wellfilled purse of sovereigns and a silver casket. The latter was a decidedly handsome article of ornamentation, being silk-lined and bearing the following inscription: "Presented to J. S. Palmer, Esq., President of the New Zealand Licensed Victuallers' Association, by the licensees of the Dominion, in appreciation of his services. March 6, 1912." The presentation was made by Mr. J. Bevertdge, president of the Wellington Association, who had come to Auckland for the special purpose.
